GENERAL INFORMATION
UNDER THE GULF is a game which simulates the actions of a
United States attack submarine. You, the player, are in control
of the nuclear powered vessel while the computer controls an
opposing fleet of ships and submarines. The game takes place in a
500nm x 500nm area of the Black Sea. In the south west corner,
two land masses merge to form a natural canal into the
Mediterranean Sea. YOUR MISSION is to keep all of the opposing
ships from reaching the open waters of the Mediterranean. Your
submarine has complete radar and sonar systems, short and long
range torpedoes, defensive systems, mining systems, and extensive
navigational capabilities. The use of all of these will be
described later in the documentation.
The game is based on a TURN SYSTEM. At the end of each turn,
the weapons systems and the enemy ships will be updated. Unlike
the enemy, however, your submarine is updated constantly. While
playing the game, you can make use of the entire turn time, or you
may select a command, ADVANCE, to automatically end the turn and
update the game for the entire time. This is an important concept
to keep in mind while playing the game and it explains why weapons
systems and the enemy ships are not updated constantly.
Another important thing to keep in mind while playing is that
the game is a lot like HIDE AND SEEK. You will see a target one
minute, and then it will disappear. This could be caused by any
number of events. The important thing to keep in mind is that the
computer will continue to project where it thinks that target
should be and then give you that information. With that, you can
attempt to intercept it. Remember, the enemy is doing the same
thing in order to destroy you. The value LOST TIME, which will
appear many times during the game, indicates how much time has
passed since you last received a definite fix on a target's
position.
GETTING STARTED
UNDER THE GULF can be run on IBM PC / AT / PS2 and compatible
computers. To start to the game, first load DOS. Next insert the
provided disk into drive A, or you floppy disk drive. At the DOS
command prompt, type 'A:' and hit the Return key. Now, simply
type 'UTG' and hit return. If you do not wish to run UNDER THE
GULF from a floppy drive, you may copy it to either a HARD DISK or
a RAM DRIVE. (There will be no significant increase in program
execution time when copied to either one of these devices.)
Once the game has loaded, you will be presented with a title
screen and a short menu of PROGRAM SPEEDS. For the novice, a
slower speed is preferable because you can enter more commands
during a shorter period of time.

USER INTERFACE
There are hundreds of variables which will need to be taken
into account for you to make decisions during play. For this
reason there are three windows on your screen in which you will
find information about the Submarine's status. Data in the
windows is color coded on monitors which support color or grey
scales (ie. Navigation and Radar information each have different
colors). The first of these windows, the large window at the top
of the screen, is called the MAIN WINDOW. The Main Window's
format never changes. Its purpose is to give you an overview of
the submarine's status. The contents of this window along with
all of the other windows which may appear during play will be
explained later on in the documentation.
Below the Main window you will find the OPTIONS WINDOW. This
window will change in accordance with the commands you select.
(ie. if you select a navigation command it will show you all of
the information relevant to navigation) There nine completely
different windows which will appear in the Options Window.
The third window, which will only appear on EGA and VGA
systems, is the TACTICAL DISPLAY WINDOW. It contains a map of
your surroundings along with a list of all the targets being
tracked. If there are any targets which are close enough to
appear on the map, then they will show up as arrow (indicating the
target's heading) or numbers. The numbers will appear if you are
using a MONOCHROME SYSTEM, otherwise the arrows will be present.
The color of the arrows will match the color of information about
that ship so that you can distinguish between targets. The
Tactical Display will contain an immense amount of information.
Refer to the key at the lower right hand corner of the window to
find out what all of the symbols indicate. If you do not have an
EGA or VGA system, you can select the MAP COMMAND under the main
menu. It will give you a similar map in the Options Window.
On the very FIRST LINE of the screen you can find four things.
The first is the number of POINTS you have accumulated. The next
piece of information is the TIME that has elapsed during play.
(Note: this time and all other times given in UNDER THE GULF are
decimal times - IE. 1.5min is equal to 1 minute and 30 seconds)
After this you will find the amount of time you have left in your
turn. Finally there will be a short message indicating the
PROGRAM'S STATUS.
Some information is only displayed at the end of each turn.
That includes weapons information and other general information
which does not appear within any of the standard windows. The
WEAPONS UPDATE SCREEN will appear at the end of every turn when
there are active torpedoes operating. It will relay all known
information about each existing torpedo. Whenever the computer
needs to relay information about damage reports, navigation modes,
radar/sonar modes or any other extraneous information, you will be
presented with the GENERAL INFORMATION SCREEN. It will only
appear at the end of a turn.
The means for which you will be executing commands is through
a simple Lotus 1-2-3 (tm) type menu system. It is located at the
bottom of your screen in the MENU WINDOW. You can move the
cursor, or the highlight, using the arrow keys. Like Lotus (tm)

menus, a short description of each command will be displayed on
the second line of the Menu Window. The information displayed
here will change as you move the cursor, in order to match the
high-lighted selection. When you have placed the cursor of the
item which you would like to select press the ENTER KEY. Instead
of using the cursor keys and the return key, you can also simply
press the first letter of the item which you want to select. To
cancel a selection and go back to the main menu you can press the
ESCAPE KEY. Online help is available for every command in UNDER
THE GULF. Just place the cursor over the command you need help on
and hit the 'H' KEY.
At times you will need to ENTER A VALUE. (IE. the speed at
which you would like your ship to travel at) When this situation
arises the Menu Window will change its appearance and you will be
prompted to enter a value. A default value is always provided
based on your previous actions. To select the default value,
simply press then ENTER KEY. You may also press the 'M' KEY to
automatically select the maximum value when one is available (ie.
speed, depth and radar range) Maximum values are very useful
because maintain maximum setting during times of repair without
user input. Pressing the ESCAPE KEY at anytime, while entering a
value, will send you back to the main menu.

NOTES ON SPECIFIC SYSTEMS
NAVIGATION SYSTEM:
By far, navigating is the most important aspect of UNDER THE
GULF. You have several modes of navigation to select from. The
most rudimentary is the MANUAL MODE. Here you can select a
course, speed and depth and the computer will do its best to
maintain it for an indefinite time.
The GOTO-POINT MODE is also a very basic type of navigation.
The computer will ask for a specific point, speed and depth and
the computer will automatically set your course to that point.
Once you are within one mile of the destination position, your
speed will be reduced to one knot. Sometimes intelligence
information will indicate the detection of an enemy submarine. If
so, you may hit the 'S' KEY when the computer asks for the
position where you want to travel to. That way, your destination
position will automatically be set to that of the enemy submarine.
If you ever come across a time when you need to obtain
supplies or repair your sub then you can select the SUPPLY-SHIP
MODE. This will automatically set your course to intercept the
nearest supply ship. Once you are within one mile of the ship,
your speed will be reduced and you will automatically surface. Be
careful! If you are not paying attention then you might surface
in the midst of a battle.
There are three modes of navigation which involve monitoring
of an enemy target. The first one is the PURSUE-TARGET MODE.
When you are in this mode, the computer will automatically pursue
a designated target at any speed or depth. The opposite of this
mode, where you essentially run away from a target, is the EVADE-
TARGET MODE. The TRAIL-TARGET MODE allows you to select a target
and then tell the computer to maintain a certain distance away
from it. In all of these modes if the computer ever stops
projecting the target's position, navigation will revert back to
manual on the most recent course, speed and depth.
MAXIMUM SPEED and MAXIMUM DEPTH are directly effected by the
capacities of the hull and engine. If they are ever damaged then
performance will fall. Maximum Speed is also effected by fatigue.
If you try to run at the maximum speed for too long, the speed
will slowly drop.Points:
RADAR/SONAR SYSTEM:
RADAR and SONAR are your eyes and ears throughout the game.
The radar system works as long as the you depth is less than
fifteen feet, any deeper and the sonar system will take over.
Both systems can give an immense information about a target. Some
of that information is the target's speed, direction, depth,
equipment, name and type. To get a complete listing of all
information available about a specific target, use the
RADAR/SONAR_EVALUATE-TARGET COMMAND.

You will be able to see some targets farther away than other
targets. This is because some targets will make more "NOISE".
You also make "noise" and the enemy's radar range is effected by
this. Things that will increase "noise" are speed, weight, radar
and sonar power, weapon's status, amount of damage and ship type.
Certain things will increase your's or the enemy's "noise" so much
that detection is assured. They include launching a long range
torpedo, releasing a noise maker, and being struck by a missile or
mine.
MINES laid by the enemy will be invisible to you until they
are detected by your sonar. For this reason it is advisable to
use caution when you are operating with very low sonar ranges. No
matter your sonar range, you will always see any enemy TORPEDOES
fired at you.
WEAPONS SYSTEM:
The outcome of the game will depend on your careful use of all
of your weapons. Using just one system will not result in the
most number of enemy ships sunk, you must use each system in
conjunction with the others.
Each torpedo system has its own advantages and disadvantages.
The most obvious is range. LONG-RANGE TORPEDOES out distance
SHORT-RANGE TORPEDOES by about two to one. This is due to the
nature of the two types of systems. Short range torpedoes are
standard torpedoes directed by onboard radar towards their target.
They may be slow, but they are almost undetectable during launch.
The long range torpedoes are powered by powerful rockets which
propel them out of the water and into the air. There, they fly
like surface to surface missiles. They are not only fast, but
also incredibly noisy. Once they are launched they reveal their
originator's exact position. The ACCURACY of the torpedoes is
based on the amount of time between the launch time and the time
that you last received an exact position fix on the target. Once
launched, a torpedo's accuracy will not change.
MINES are an all purpose weapon. Use your imagination to put
them to use. MINE FIELDS are an obvious thing to make with them,
but it is up to you on how you make your fields or where you put
them. The enemy also has mines and they are not easily detected
when you are operating at high speeds and low sonar power
settings.
THE ENEMY:
The enemy is carefully coordinated. They are not simply
individual ships, but instead a team. Communications between them
is constant so if one of the enemy sees you then they all will
know your coordinates and actions. Their object is to leave the
Black Sea and enter into the Mediterranean. However, if they see
you, their objective will be to destroy you at all costs.

Remember, the enemy can do everything that you can do and they
have A COORDINATED EFFORT.
There are several TYPES OF ENEMY SHIPS which you will
encounter. Here is a short list of the different ship types and
their general characteristics.

YOUR SUBMARINE:
DAMAGE inflicted on your submarine is automatically fixed over
time. If, however, the overall capacity ever goes below 20% then
you will SINK. Damage to the hull can cause lead to an
uncontrollable DEPTH. The LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM, when damaged, has
reserves for 20 minutes. Once these reserves are gone, the crew
will die unless the sub is at the surface. If any system ever has
a capacity below 30%, it will not be fixed automatically. The
only way for it to be recovered is to rendezvous with your supply
ship. You will be informed about any change in the status of your
sub in the GENERAL INFORMATION SCREEN.

POINTS SYSTEM:
The total number of points which you accumulate will always be
displayed on the first line of the screen. When the game begins,
you will have 100 free points. Points can be earned by evading
in-bound torpedoes (50 points per torpedo), sinking enemy ships
(100 points per ship). If an enemy ship every leaves the Black
Sea then you will lose 100 points.
If you earn a HIGH SCORE then you will be asked to enter your
name at the end of the game. The eight highest scores are
recorded for future reference and the highest score will be
displayed on the opening screen. To view the entire list of high
scores, use the OPTIONS_VIEW-HIGH-SCORE command.
FILE SUB-SYSTEM:
UNDER THE GULF allows you to SAVE and RETRIEVE up to nine
different games at once. If the program incurs a DISK ERROR while
it is saving then it will automatically abort the save and return
to the game. This, however, will not happen if there is an error
while retrieving a game. Instead, the program will abort and exit
to DOS.

AVAILABLE COMMANDS
The following is a list of all the commands, which can be
selected in UNDER THE GULF, and a complete description of each.
The commands will be in uppercase and nested commands will be
preceded by the first command you select.
Example: COMMAND Weapons_Release-Noise-Maker
To select this command you would first select WEAPONS from
the main menu. Then from the WEAPONS menu you would select
RELEASE-NOISE-MAKER.
COMMAND SPEED_NORMAL-SPEED
NORMAL-SPEED will make UNDER THE GULF run in real time. This
means that one second of play is equal to one second of real
time. Real time play should only be used by experienced
players who are familiar with all of the commands. Once game
play starts, the speed cannot be changed without starting
over.
COMMAND SPEED_SLOW-SPEED
SLOW-SPEED will make UNDER THE GULF run slower than real
time. This means that one second of play is equal to two
second of real time. Slow play should be used by intermediate
or beginning players who are not yet completely familiar with
all of the commands. Once game play starts, the speed cannot
be changed without starting over.
COMMAND SPEED_X-SLOW-SPEED
X-SLOW-SPEED will make UNDER THE GULF run very slowly. One
second of play will be equal to one four seconds of real
time. X-slow play should be used by beginning players who are
not familiar with the commands. Once game play starts, the
speed cannot be changed without starting over.
COMMAND ADVANCE
When selected, ADVANCE, will update the enemy and all weapons
systems for the entire Turn Time. It is possible to change
the Turn Time using the OPTION_CHANGE-TURN-TIME command.
ADVANCE, regardless of the Turn Time, will be selected for
you when a torpedo is within 5 seconds of your submarine.
Once ADVANCE is selected, several screens may appear in the
options window which will give general information about the
game's progress.

COMMAND NAVIGATION
NAVIGATION is the one of the most important commands in UNDER
THE GULF. Once selected, another menu will appear with
various commands dealing with navigation. They include
EVADE, GOTO-POINT, MANUAL, PURSUE, SUPPLY- SHIP, and TRAIL-
TARGET. The Options Window will also display all information
available about navigation.
COMMAND NAVIGATION_EVADE-TARGET
EVADE-TARGET will automatically set the submarine's course,
and continually update it, so that you will be on a heading
directly away from a selected target. You can specify any
depth and speed at which to evade the target. This is useful
if you have suffered significant damage and wish to move out
of the weapon's range of a target.
COMMAND NAVIGATION_GOTO-POINT
GOTO-POINT allows you to designate a point, on the 500nm x
500nm map, for the navigation systems to head to. Depth and
speed can be selected manually using this command. If sonar
has detected an enemy submarine and you wish to head towards
its reported position, you may hit 'S' instead of an X and Y
number. Once you are within one nautical mile of the desired
point, your speed will be reduced to one knot.
COMMAND NAVIGATION_MANUAL
MANUAL lets you specify any desired course, depth or speed.
If you are pursuing, evading or trailing a target which is no
longer being tracked, the navigation systems will revert to
manual.
COMMAND NAVIGATION_PURSUE-TARGET
PURSUE-TARGET will automatically set the submarine's course,
and continually update it, so that you will be on a heading
directly to a selected target. You can specify any depth and
speed at which to pursue the target. This command is useful
if you wish to enter a battle with a specific target. Once
you are within one nautical mile of the target, you will
automatically slow down.

COMMAND NAVIGATION_SUPPLY-SHIP
SUPPLY-SHIP will set your course to the nearest supply point.
Depth and speed can be set manually. Once you are within one
nautical mile of the point, your sub will slow down and
surface automatically. Be careful when you are surfacing to
make sure that there are no hostile targets within weapons
range which could fire on you.
COMMAND NAVIGATION_TRAIL-TARGET
TRAIL-TARGET allows you to specify a target and a distance to
trail behind it at. Your speed and course will automatically
be adjusted to maintain the specified distance, but your
depth can be set manually.
COMMAND OTHER
OTHER allows you to issue commands that do not directly
effect the operation of the ship. The commands available are
ABOUT, CHANGE-TURN-TIME, QUIT, VIEW-HIGH-SCORES, RETRIEVE-
GAME, and SAVE-GAME. The options window will remain the same
when you select the OTHER command.
COMMAND OTHER_ABOUT
ABOUT will display the version of UNDER THE GULF and other
program information in the Options Window. When using this
help file, the save game files, and the retrieve game files,
they must be of the same version as UNDER THE GULF. The
information in the Options Window will remain there until you
select another command which needs this window.
COMMAND OTHER_CHANGE-TURN-TIME
CHANGE-TURN-TIME allows you to change the Turn Time. The Turn
Time is the amount of time you are allowed to enter commands
and the time for which the enemy and all weapon systems are
updated when you select the ADVANCE command or you run out of
time. You cannot change the turn time to less time than has
already passed. When in-bound torpedoes are present the
maximum value for the Turn Time is 30 seconds.
COMMAND OTHER_QUIT
QUIT simply lets you quit the game and exit to DOS. If you
wish to save your game, you must do so before selecting th
QUIT command.

COMMAND OTHER_VIEW-HIGH-SCORES
VIEW-HIGH-SCORES displays the top eight scores in the Options
Window. Along with the scores, you can see general
information about the game during which the score was earned.
If you have a high score, it will be recorded when the game
ends.
COMMAND OTHER_RETRIEVE-GAME
RETRIEVE-GAME allows you to retrieve one of nine games which
have been saved on disk, in the current directory. The saved
games must have been saved using the same version of UNDER
THE GULF. If there is an error in the save game file, the
program may be corrupted and forced to abort.
COMMAND OTHER_SAVE-GAME
SAVE-GAME allows you to save the game you are currently
playing. You can save up to nine different games. If there is
not enough disk space, or any other I/O error occurs, then
you will be informed and the save game operation will abort.
COMMAND PAUSE
PAUSE stops the game temporarily. You can hit any key after
you select PAUSE to resume normal play. In every menu,
except NAVIGATION, you can select 'P', even though the
command does not appear, to pause the game.
COMMAND RADAR/SONAR
RADAR/SONAR displays all information pertinent to the Radar
and Sonar systems in the options window. You will also be
presented with another menu with commands that affect Radar
and Sonar operation. They are EVALUATE, FLASH-RADAR (SONAR),
OVERALL-STATUS, RADAR, SONAR.
COMMAND RADAR/SONAR_DETECTED-MINES
RADAR/SONAR_DETECTED-MINES will display a list of all known
mines in the Options Window. You can deploy your mines by
using the WEAPONS_DEPLOY-MINE command.

COMMAND RADAR/SONAR_EVALUATE
EVALUATE allows you to see all information known about any
one of the targets you are tracking. If a large amount of
time has passed since you had direct radar or sonar contact
with the specified target, you may be unable to see all of
the information. Remember that when you do not have direct
contact, the values displayed are only approximations.
COMMAND RADAR/SONAR_FLASH-RADAR
FLASH-RADAR allows you to momentarily set the radar system to
it's maximum power. By doing so, you can locate targets
without exposing yourself to any long-term detection. The
command on the screen will automatically change to FLASH-
SONAR when your submarine dives below fifteen feet.
COMMAND RADAR/SONAR_FLASH-SONAR
SONAR allows you to momentarily set the sonar system to it's
maximum power. By doing so, you can locate targets without
exposing yourself to any long- term detection. The command
on the screen will automatically change to FLASH-RADAR when
your submarine ascends to less than fifteen feet.
COMMAND RADAR/SONAR_OVERALL-STATUS
OVERALL-STATUS will display the all information about the
radar and sonar systems in the Options Window. This command
should be used if you are currently evaluating a target and
wish to see the general information about the radar and sonar
systems instead of the evaluate information.
COMMAND RADAR/SONAR_RADAR
RADAR lets you select the power at which you wish the radar
system to operate at. If the submarine is damaged you may
not be able to set the power to 100%. To see the effect that
your change made, look at your submarine's radar range which
is be displayed in the Options Window. If you choose to set
the radar to it's maximum, the computer will automatically

COMMAND SUB
SUB lets you view both statistical and damage information
about your submarine. Once selected another menu will
appear. By selecting DAMAGE/SUPPLY-REPORT, you will be
presented with a window which summarizes all information
available about damages and supplies on the submarine.
Selecting STATISTICS-REPORT will display information about
the progress of the game relative to both you and the enemy.
COMMAND SUB_DAMAGE/SUPPLY-REPORT
DAMAGE/SUPPLY-REPORT will display all information available
concerning damage and supplies. Any damage to a system on
the submarine will automatically be fixed over time, unless
the capacity of that system has fallen below 30%. All damage
can be fixed and supplies replenished by intercepting the
supply point at the surface.
COMMAND SUB_STATISTICS-REPORT
SUB_STATISTICS-REPORT gives a general summary of the progress
of the game. The figures given bear no importance to the
game's play; however, they may prove to be interesting at the
end of a long mission.
COMMAND TARGETS
TARGETS displays a list of all targets being tracked in the
Options Window. Remember that when a target has not been in
direct radar or sonar contact for a long period of time, the
values displayed are only approximations.

COMMAND WEAPONS
WEAPONS allows you to fire at your enemy and operate
defensive systems to confuse in-bound torpedoes. The Options
Window will display all important information that you will
need to make decisions concerning the weapon's system.
Commands specific to the weapons system will also appear in
the menu window. They are LONG-RANGE-LAUNCH, RELEASE-NOISE-
MAKER, SHORT-RANGE- LAUNCH, and TARGET-SELECT.
COMMAND WEAPONS_DEPLOY-MINE
WEAPONS_DEPLOY-MINE will release a mine to the surface behind
your sub. Because of your initially close proximity to it,
it will not activate for several minutes, but after that it
can cause severe damage to both you and the enemy. Mines can
only be detected by using sonar, so be careful about running
for long periods of time with the sonar turned down. A
complete listing of all known mines can be obtained with the
RADAR/SONAR_DETECTED-MINES command.
COMMAND WEAPONS_LONG-RANGE-LAUNCH
LONG-RANGE-LAUNCH allows you fire a long range torpedo at any
target within range. Long range torpedoes are rocket
propelled and give off a great deal of noise when launched so
they will reveal your position to the enemy. These torpedoes
have relatively low destructive power. Like other systems,
the capacity of the long range torpedo system must be at
least 80% to operate properly.
COMMAND WEAPONS_RELEASE-NOISE-MAKER
RELEASE-NOISE-MAKER allows you to release a noise maker from
the submarine. Noise makers will detour inbound torpedoes by
reproducing noise similar to the sub's. The farther you
travel away from the noise maker, the better chance it has of
detouring an in-bound torpedo. This command releases one,
which will last for about ten minutes. Like other systems,
the capacity of the noise maker system must be at least 80%
to operate properly.

COMMAND WEAPONS_SHORT-RANGE-LAUNCH
SHORT-RANGE-LAUNCH allows you fire a short range torpedo at
any target within range. These torpedoes are very quiet and
will not reveal your position to the enemy. They also have a
huge explosive power compared to long rage torpedoes, but of
course their range is limited. Like other systems, the
capacity of the short range torpedo system must be at least
80% to operate properly.
COMMAND WEAPONS_TARGET-SELECT
TARGET-SELECT allows you to get offensive weapons information
about a specific target. Once selected, information about the
range and accuracy of your weapons will be displayed in the
options window. General information about the specified
target will also be displayed. Remember that when a target
has not been in direct radar or sonar contact for a long
period of time, the values displayed are only approximations.
COMMAND MAP
MAP will display a small map of the playing area in the
Options Window. This command is only used when the game is
being played on non EGA or non VGA systems. On EGA and VGA
systems, you will be able to customize the map which is
already displayed in the Map Window.
COMMAND MAP_SET-MAP-SCALE
This will allow you to select the dimensions of the Tactical
Display. Smaller scales are helpful during a battle situation
and the larger scales are helpful for navigation. This
command is only available on EGA and VGA systems.
COMMAND MAP_SET-MAP-SCALE_A)-52_X_27
By selecting this command, the Tactical Display will be set
to cover a range of 52 nautical miles by 27 nautical miles.
Smaller scales are helpful during a battle situation and the
larger scales are helpful for navigation. This command is
only available on EGA and VGA systems.

By selecting this command, the Tactical Display will be set

COMMAND MAP_SET-MAP-SCALE_F)-412_X_219
By selecting this command, the Tactical Display will be set
to cover a range of 412 nautical miles by 219 nautical miles.
Smaller scales are helpful during a battle situation and the
larger scales are helpful for navigation. This command is
only available on EGA and VGA systems.
COMMAND MAP_REDRAW-MAP
This command will redraw the map in the map window. This is
useful because, although information may change, the map will
only be updated automatically once every 15 seconds. This
command is only available on EGA and VGA systems.

COMMAND MAP_TARGET-INFO-TOGGLE
Circles which indicate your radar / sonar range and you
weapons range will constantly appear in the map window.
However, the ranges of the enemy will only appear if this
command is used to turn them on. The reason why this
information is not always displayed is that it can cause a
larger scaled map to be very cluttered. This command is only
available on EGA and VGA systems.

COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS:
There are several command line parameters which let you
customize the screen during the game. They are...
/C This forces the computer to use color.
/M This forces the computer to use monochrome colors.
/E This forces the computer to use the EGA/VGA graphics mode.
/N This forces the computer to use the 25 line mode.
/D This turns off the direct screen writes.
/S The makes the computer check for snow on CGA systems.
